GORILLA

  • Conservation Status: Endangered
  • Gorillas have always fascinated guests. They are the largest of all primates, animals that include monkeys, lemurs, orangutans, chimpanzees, and humans. Gorillas are peaceful, family oriented, plant-eating animals.

Can you imagine waking up surrounded by food? Almost everything a gorilla eats is plant material, so life in the forest is like living in a huge restaurant! Gorilla food includes leaves, stems, fruits, seeds, and roots. And gorillas love to eat! An adult male snacks on up to 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of food each day. The Safari Park’s gorillas eat a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, plus banana and ficus leaves.

Just to the left of the gorilla habitat is our gorilla activity center. You can see how you measure up to an adult gorilla and listen to some of the sounds gorillas make. Sit down and watch a video about how we take care of these gentle giants.
