SCIMITAR-HORNED ORYX

  • Conservation Status: Endangered
  • One of six species of oryx, the scimitar-horned oryx is named for the long, curved shape of their horns, which resemble Arabian swords called “scimitars.” These distinct horns can reach up to 36 inches long.

Scimitar-horned oryx are native to open deserts, grasslands, and scrublands throughout North Africa. As an adaptation to this hot, dry environment, they can survive long periods without water, and can tolerate body temperature increases of several degrees without needing to sweat.

Scimitar-horned oryx are a conservation success story! They were classified as extinct in native habitats in 1991, but thanks to conservation populations like the one at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, they have been reintroduced into protected native landscapes and their numbers are increasing. They were even downlisted to endangered in 2023. You may be able to see a herd while enjoying Africa Tram  or another wildlife safari experience , or spot them passing through on a wildlife live camera!
