PHEASANT

  • Conservation Status: Threatened
  • Argus pheasants are the size of peafowl and live in the montane forests of Southeast Asia. They have powerful legs for walking. Strong flight muscles can get their heavy body out of danger, and eyes on the side of their head help detect predators.

The adult male argus pheasant has extremely long central tail feathers. But his inner wing (secondary) feathers are his most remarkable plumage. These amazing feathers are longer than the main flight (primary) feathers. And each one has about 20 or so eye-like ocelli that are strung out along each inner vane like pearls on a string. As the male spreads his wings and holds them vertically in front of his body, he resembles a gigantic blossoming flower. What female could resist?

You can admire our argus pheasants along the Lagoon Loop in Nairobi Village.
